From Wikipedia:

Owing to competition between the harmonica factories in Trossingen and Klingenthal, machines were invented to punch the covers for the reeds. In 1857, Matthais Hohner, a clockmaker from Trossingen, started producing harmonicas, eventually to become the first person to mass-produce them. He was the first to order the wooden comb that goes in the center of the instrument from other firms which machine-cut the parts. By 1868, he could deliver his first orders to the United States.

By the 1820s, the diatonic harmonica had largely reached its modern form. Other types followed soon thereafter, including the various tremolo and octave harmonicas. By the late 19th century, harmonica production was a big business, having evolved from a handcraft into mass-production with figures well into the millions, a market which continues to expand. New designs were still developed in the 20th century, including the chromatic harmonica, first made by Hohner in 1924, the bass harmonica, and the chord harmonica. In the 21st century, radical new designs are still being introduced into the market, such as the Suzuki Overdrive and Hohner XB-40.

Which Harmonica is better for blues, a Hohner Special 20 or a Hohner Blues Harp?
Question:
Hey, I am about to buy a harmonica to mostly play blues stuff. After a few hours of research, it seems the best two harmonicas would be a Hohner Special 20 or a Hohner Blues Harp. Unfortunately, Lee Oskars are not available at my local store, and I don't want to buy over the internet. Thanks

Answer:
They are both good. I have both types as well as some Oskars. The only down side to the Blues Harp is the comb is wood which is susceptible to swelling although I believe the newer ones use a better wood in that regards. The only personal negative experience with wood comb harmonicas is last summer I played wood comb harps for several hours and I got a small cut on my lip. As far as buying harmonicas on line, I have had good luck with Musicians Friend, Music123 and Coast to Coast. All very good. I would stay from Harp Depot though. I and several others had bad experiences with them. As far as buying locally, I like Guitar Center Stores.

How do you make it so a Hohner Marine Band harmonica doesn't cut your lips?
Question:
I recently bought two Hohner Marine Band harmonicas and I have to say I am in love with them. The only problem is, like most Marine Band owners, they keep cutting my lips. Is there any way to prevent this without taking the instrument apart and risking its destruction?

Answer:
you can try using sand paper to smooth the edges although that might not be the problem. If you are cutting your lips then maybe it is your technique. You can also try Lee Oscar harmonicas

Is a Hohner Marine Band 364 diatonic harmonica a lot better than a Lee Oskar major diatonic harmonica?
Question:
I'm going to buy a harmonica (for playing Bob Dylan songs and the like), and I'm wondering which one I should get. The Hohner Marine Band 364 is $10 more than the Lee Oskar, but is it that much better?

Answer:
Not better, just different. Lee Oskars tend to have a brighter sound than the Marine Band. I'd lean towards a Marine band if you were doing a lot of blues but a Lee Oskar would certainly fit some folksy Dylan stuff. Also, I've never had any issues with a Lee Oskar out of the box- Hohner I've found to be slightly less reliable in that regard.

How much could I sell never really been used Hohner guitar for?
Question:
I need to make some money not a lot just a little and I was wondering how much I could sell my Hohner Accoustic guitar for? I've never really used it because I've never gotten into it. So if anyone could please tell me that would be great :) I don't want to much it for to much or to little.

Answer:
The rule of thumb is that used gear is worth half of its original price or current price, whichever is lower. Regardless of condition, it's still used. These are not particularly desirable guitars.

Is the Hohner Fuego Azul a quality harmonica for beginners?
Question:
This will be my first harmonica and I'm looking for something that isn't a piece of crap but is reasonably cheap. I found one of these on ebay and it looked beautiful. I've heard that Hohner is a top brand, but how is this particular model?

Answer:
While I'm sure there are exceptions, a harmonica that costs less than $10 is not a quality instrument. You might find that this level of harmonica will not be very responsive -- requires more air to produce the sounds. Other characteristics: thin sound, difficult to bend, sharp edges in your mouth, and reeds that blow out too quickly. A harmonica in the $20 - $30 range is a good bet for a beginner. Yes, Hohner is a respected brand. But they are not the only one. You could look into a Bushman Delta Frost, Suzuki Harpmaster, or Seydel Blues Session.

What can i play with a Hohner Marine Band?
Question:
I just received a Hohner Marine Band in the key of C as a gift and my first harp, and it doesn't seem to work very well with most blues rhythms and melodies. Any ideas on what to play?

Answer:
If its a C harp, you can cross harp in G, or in the 3rd position, play in D. Cross harping will give you those lovely Bluesy bends, so beloved by us bluesman! best way to practice, find some blues backing tracks in G and just play until you get the feel for it. Enjoy, and listen to as much music as you can, train you ears to here where the harp will fit in.

Do you prefer the Hohner Blues Harp or the Lee Oscar Harmonicas more?
Question:
Which do you prefer? Have you noticed that the Hohner Blues Harp has a wood comb?

Answer:
I like the Hohner Blues harp better, I can bend notes more easily. Lee Oscar's usually are cheaper quality.

What are your opinions on Hohner guitars?
Question:
I am about to start learning how to play the guitar, but ill be getting the smaller hohner acoustic guitar but does it make a difference because of the size. It sounds good when i was strumming through it and what are your opinions of the brand?

Are hohner piedmont blues harmonicas any good?
Question:
Are hohner piedmont blues harmonicas any better than hohner marine band harmonicas? I am getting a harmonica for my friend, and he wants the marine band. But the piedmont blues harmonicas are a little bit cheaper. Are they good quality? Thanks :)

Answer:
Sorry to disagree with Gail, but as a 30 plus year harp player, I can tell you that the Piedmonts are pure crap. Stick with the Marine Band or a Special 20 (my preference)
