A harmonica is a free reed wind instrument. Tones or notes are made by blowing air into or drawing air out by placing lips over individual holes (reed chambers) or multiple holes. The pressure caused by blowing or drawing air into the reed chambers causes a reed or multiple reeds to vibrate up and down creating sound. Each chamber has multiple, variable-tuned brass or bronze reeds which are secured at one end and loose on the other end, the loose end vibrates and creates sound. Reeds are pre-tuned to individual tones. Each tone is determined according to the size of reed. Longer reeds make deep, low sounds and short reeds make higher-pitched sounds. On certain types of harmonica the pre-tuned reed can be changed (bending a note) to another note by blowing or drawing air strongly into the chamber. There are many types of harmonicas; Diatonic, Chromatic, Tremolo, Orchestral, Bass (see below), each used for its own specific sound and can be played in many keys and many types of music.
The harmonica is used in blues and American folk music, jazz, classical music, country music, rock and roll, and pop music. Increasingly, the harmonica is finding its place in more electronically generated music, such as dance and hip-hop, as well as funk and acid jazz.
The harmonica has other nicknames, especially in blues music, including: harp, blues harp, mouth organ and blues mouth organ.

Where do I find Lee Oskar/Hohner harmonicas in the Philippines? Question: I live in the Philippines and I want to start playing the harmonica. They say Lee Oskar and Hohner is the best brands. Where do I find it here and what store? Answer: in bombay bazars, music stores, or gen. merchanise stores. you won't find them in malls. |

is hohner harmonicas good harmonicas for a beginer? do thay make good instruments? Question: do they make good instruments. is it a good musical sound? would it be a good brand for a beginer? Answer: Yeah, Hohner are good. However, I would recommend the Lee Oskar harmonicas - plastic body, so they do not get so grubby, and produce a loud, clear note. They're about 20 quid, I think. Look out for them - they're in black boxes, with fluorescent stickers and bright lettering. |

Are hohner piedmont blues harmonicas any good? Question: Are hohner piedmont blues harmonicas any better than hohner marine band harmonicas? I am getting a harmonica for my friend, and he wants the marine band. But the piedmont blues harmonicas are a little bit cheaper. Are they good quality? Thanks :) Answer: Sorry to disagree with Gail, but as a 30 plus year harp player, I can tell you that the Piedmonts are pure crap. Stick with the Marine Band or a Special 20 (my preference) |

What is the best set of Hohner harmonicas i can buy? Question: I just want the essential set nothing really nice?I have dont know what notes things i want either. But i baseicully want 3 for less than 75 dollars Answer: You most likely want to stick with blues harps in the common chords used by guitar. If price is an object there is actually a type of harmonica that has two sets of reeds and a slide that changes the chord sequence from one to the other (slide chromatic). If you want single scale instruments ... the best "set" of diatonic is probably the Piedmont Blues set. It is likely gonna run more than $75 (6 in the set), but you only buy them once if you take care of your instruments properly. |

Do you prefer the Hohner Blues Harp or the Lee Oscar Harmonicas more? Question: Which do you prefer? Have you noticed that the Hohner Blues Harp has a wood comb? Answer: I like the Hohner Blues harp better, I can bend notes more easily. Lee Oscar's usually are cheaper quality. |

What is the sedel system as used in harmonicas as opposed to the system used by Hohner? Question: Seydel SYSTEM seems to be important to some. Why Answer: |

are Hohner harmonicas considered "low end" and cheap or are they of good quality? Answer: Hohners are played by 90% or more of the world's leading players in all genres. They do make some cheap models that are a waste of money-namely the Piedmont Blues sets and some of the other lower priced harps such as the Old Standby, American Ace, etc. are geared more towards kids and beginners. Any of their instruments priced from about $25 and up are well made, quality instruments. P.S. There are many types of harmonica other than diatonic and chromatic, but since you are asking in the blues forum, one of the two is likely what you're asking about. |

How do you make it so a Hohner Marine Band harmonica doesn't cut your lips? Question: I recently bought two Hohner Marine Band harmonicas and I have to say I am in love with them. The only problem is, like most Marine Band owners, they keep cutting my lips. Is there any way to prevent this without taking the instrument apart and risking its destruction? Answer: you can try using sand paper to smooth the edges although that might not be the problem. If you are cutting your lips then maybe it is your technique. You can also try Lee Oscar harmonicas |

Which Harmonica is better for blues, a Hohner Special 20 or a Hohner Blues Harp? Question: Hey, I am about to buy a harmonica to mostly play blues stuff. After a few hours of research, it seems the best two harmonicas would be a Hohner Special 20 or a Hohner Blues Harp. Unfortunately, Lee Oskars are not available at my local store, and I don't want to buy over the internet. Thanks Answer: They are both good. I have both types as well as some Oskars. The only down side to the Blues Harp is the comb is wood which is susceptible to swelling although I believe the newer ones use a better wood in that regards. The only personal negative experience with wood comb harmonicas is last summer I played wood comb harps for several hours and I got a small cut on my lip. As far as buying harmonicas on line, I have had good luck with Musicians Friend, Music123 and Coast to Coast. All very good. I would stay from Harp Depot though. I and several others had bad experiences with them. As far as buying locally, I like Guitar Center Stores. |
